Petrol tank.

I've removed the petrol tank. Unfortunately, there were some holes in it. This would make a very thirsty car!

Mended it with synthetic metal, now just a respray and it should be OK. A new tank would set me back about €600 so it's worth a try.

The petrol gauge, for those who are curious as to how that looks...

Replacing the piston rings

Cleaning the gaps with an old piston ring to get all the dirt out before replacing the rings.

Measuring the gap. All the rings (made by Deves) were well within spec.

Simple but effective, this pair of pliers borrowed from the local garage.

Rings in place. Be careful: do not put the gaps all on the same side!

Tapping them in place.

... repeat 5 more times ;-)

Some cosmetics

Exhaust manifolds resprayed with black stove paint

Cleaning the rust and build up from the engine.

The air intake

Resprayed and new air filter. (The old one is below the new one.)

The oil pump, disassembled and cleaned. Clearances are still good so it'll be reused.

New valves

Valve grinding set costs about €10 at http://www.angloparts.com

Old valve seat

Reground valve seat

Coarse valve grinding paste...

And after grinding...

The new valves in place

... as compared to the old situation ;-)

While waiting for the replacement parts to arrive (sometime next week I hope) I started cleaning...

First up: removing the valves. I could borrow the necessary tool from my local garage.

The engine looks less frightening once it's been taken apart...

One of the sides. Right hand side has been cleaned using (very!) fine sanding paper.

One of these pistons has been cleaned. Guess which one.

Finally you can tell the front from the back of the piston.

Left combustion chamber has been cleaned.

The engine

While waiting for replacement parts to arrive I started dismantling the engine. Carburetter overhaul will follow once the engine has been put back together.

Top view, everything still in place.

Cam covers removed.

Some dirt in and around the water pump.

Bottom view, sump removed. The oil pump is on the right.

Timing gear cover removed. I had to grind through the bottom timing chain because the pistons are blocking the crankshaft and you have to turn the top timing chain to be able to remove the cam shafts.

With the cam shafts removed, the cylinder head could be removed and it was somewhat obvious why the pistons are blocked.

The valves. These will be replaced.

One of the pistons (the only one that came out right away, the rest is still soaking...)
